In its pure form, molybdenum is a silvery-grey metal with a hardness of 5.5. it has a melting point of 2623 °c (4753 °f); of the naturally occurring elements, only tantalum, tungsten and carbon have higher melting points. weak oxidation of molybdenum starts at 300 °c (572 °f). it has one of the lowest coefficients of thermal expansion among commercially used metals. the tensile strength of molybdenum wires increases about 3 times, from about 10 to 30 gpa. when their diameter decreases from ~50–100 nm to 10 nm.[7] molybdenum is a transition metal with an electrone gativity of 2.16 on the pauling scale and a standard atomic weight of 95.95 g/mol. it does not visibly react with oxygen or water at room temperature, and the bulk oxidation occurs at temperatures above 600 °c, resulting in molybdednium trioxide.

Molybdenum is also used in steel alloys for its high corrosive resistance and weldability. molybdenum contributes further corrosion resistance to type-300 stainless steelspecifically type-316) and especially so in the so-called super austentic stainless steels (such as alloy al-6xn, 254smo or 1925hmo). molybdenum acts by increasing lattice strain, thus increasing the energy required to dissolve out iron atoms from the surface. molybdenum can also be used to enhance the corrosion resistance of ferritic (for example grade 444) and martensitic (for example 1.4122 and 1.4418) stainless steels molybdenum dusts and fumes, which can be generated by mining or metalworking, can be toxic, especially if ingested (including dust trapped in the sinuses and later swallowed).low levels of prolonged exposure can cause irritation to the eyes and skin. direct inhalation or ingestion of molybdenum and its oxides should be avoided regulations specify the maximum permissible molybdenum exposure in an 8-hour day as 5 mg/m3. chronic exposure to 60 to 600 mg/m3 can cause symptoms including fatigue, headaches and joint pains

STAINLESS STEEL 202 PIPE DESCRIPTION:

Type 202 Stainless Steel is an austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese stainless steel which was developed to conserve nickel. Type 202 is a lower cost alternative to conventional Cr-Ni stainless steels such as 301 and 304. Nickel is replaced by additions of manganese and nitrogen. It is non-hardenable by thermal treatment, but may be cold worked to high tensile strengths. Type 201 is essentially nonmagnetic in the annealed condition and becomes magnetic when cold worked. Type 201 can be substituted for Type 301 in many applications

STAINLESS STEEL 202 PIPE PROCESSING:

The annealing temperature for Type 202 is between 1850-2000°F. Rapid cooling through the carbide precipitation range (1500 – 800 ° F) is necessary to keep the carbides in solution and prevent sensitization. Type 201 is not hardenable by thermal treatment; it is only hardenable by cold working.

STAINLESS STEEL 202 PIPE WELDING:

Type 202 can be welded by all conventional methods applied to 18 percent chromium, 8 percent nickel steels. Filler metal of the conventional chromium-nickel analyses can be used. Like other austenitic stainless steels where carbon is not controlled below 0.03%, Type 202 is susceptible to intergranular corrosion in the weld heat affected zone.

Type 202 is resistant to a wide variety of mild to moderately corrosive environments. It has corrosion resistance approaching that of Types 301and has been successfully substituted for 304 in many mild environments.

Background

Grade 316 is the standard molybdenum-bearing grade, second in importance to 304 amongst the austenitic stainless steels. The molybdenum gives 316 better overall corrosion resistant properties than Grade 304, particularly higher resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments.

Grade 316L, the low carbon version of 316 and is immune from sensitisation (grain boundary carbide precipitation). Thus it is extensively used in heavy gauge welded components (over about 6mm). There is commonly no appreciable price difference between 316 and 316L stainless steel.

The austenitic structure also gives these grades excellent toughness, even down to cryogenic temperatures.

Compared to chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steels, 316L stainless steel offers higher creep, stress to rupture and tensile strength at elevated temperatures.

347 Stainless Steel is variant of the basic austenitic 18/8 Grade 304 with added Columbium - the introduction of Columbium stabilizes the steel and eliminates carbide precipitation which subsequently causes intergranular corrosion.

The steel has excellent forming and welding qualities and excellent toughness even at cryogenic temperatures.

Physical Properties of 347 Stainless Steel Pipes and Tubes

The physical properties of Types 321 and 347 are quite similar and, for all practical purposes, may be considered to be the same. The values given in the table may be used to apply to both steels.
When properly annealed, the Alloys 321 and 347 stainless steels consist principally of austenite and carbides of titanium or columbium. Small amounts of ferrite may or may not be present in the microstructure. Small amounts of sigma phase may form during long time exposure in the 1000⁰F to 1500⁰F (593⁰C to 816⁰C) temperature range.
The stabilized Alloys 321 and 347 stainless steels are not hardenable by heat treatment.
The overall heat transfer coefficient of metals is determined by factors in addition to thermal conductivity of the metal. In most cases, film coefficients, scaling, and surface conditions are such that not more than 10 to 15% more surface area is required for stainless steels than for other metals having higher thermal conductivity. The ability of stainless steels to maintain clean surfaces often allows better heat transfer than other metals having higher thermal conductivity.

321 Stainless Steel Pipes and Tubes

Type 321 is a standard austenitic 18/8 chromium nickel alloy with the addition of Titanium making it an excellent choice in elevated temperature environments.

The titanium stabilises the material removing its susceptibility to the effects of intergranular corrosion. 321 is therefore the stainless steel material of choice for applications in working environments up to 900⁰ C.

A drawback of Type 321 is that the titanium does not transfer well across a high temperature arc, so it is not recommended as a welding consumable.

In such instances, 347 is the preferred choice as the Niobium performs the same function as Titanium but can be still transferred across a high temperature arc. Type 347 is therefore the consumable of choice for welding Grade 321.

The steel has excellent forming and welding qualities and excellent toughness even at cryogenic temperatures. If you are looking for a stainless steel to provide resistance to intergranular corrosion, 304L is the normal choice as it is a more commonly used and supplied steel.

However, 321 is a much better option in operating temperature environments in excess of 500⁰ C and therefore have its own merits.

Note that Type 321 does not polish well so it is not practical to use this material as cosmetic architectural feature.
